On Cinco de Mayo…

So, as I was going in to work, I was greeted by a very enthusiastic, “Happy Cinco de Mayo!”

Any real Mexican would have been flattered at the gesture of cultural awareness except for one, minor detail.

This happened yesterday!

Giving the person the benefit of the doubt, I decided to dismiss it as the person losing track of the days (Heck, I myself sometimes forget what day Friday the 13th falls on!).

So, in my obscure way of trying to be nice, I attempted to hint that it wasn’t the 5th yet with the remark, “Thanks, but you’re off.”

In return, he offered me a very confused look and proceeded to ask, “Oh, so when is it then?”

So, it wasn’t that he couldn’t keep his days straight (like most band members…).  It was that he couldn’t count (…like most drummers!)!!!

“But, hey.  What was I so annoyed for?” I wondered, a glint of optimism sneaking its ugly voice…

I, like any true Mexican, should have seized this opportunity for an additional day of celebration (and beer!  Maybe we should call it ‘Cinco de Mayo Eve…). Heck, give it a few weeks and I’m sure we’ll even figure a way to add Osama’s demise day which happened on the 1st to our repertoire… (We won’t even say “Happy 1st de Mayo”, we’ll just shout, “UNO!”).

As I pondered the cleverness of me over my newly created holiday, I was crushed to discover that there was already a holiday on the fourth (stoopid optimism!).

It appears that there is a cult which celebrates and holds in high regard the creation of a world and many of the aliens, to include Ewoks and Wookies, which is located somewhere far, far away.

I was distressed momentarily as I watched my chance for more beer slip out of my grip.  Then, it struck me.  What if the person had known of this holiday and had intentionally meant the fourth for me?

“Yah wah eee chop yah wah ah toe meet toe pee-chee keene!” which means, “Yo quiero Taco Bell!”

Hmmm, it’s a long shot, but…

Let’s see.  I am Mexican, which many would consider to be aliens (Check!). And most Mexicans do sound like Ewoks when they get excited or angry, ask my mum…some even kind of resemble them (Check, check…).  And I am from far, far away? Yes, I’m in Germany and Mexico is very far, far away! (Check!!!).  Yes!!!

So, in all actuality, I can still fall into this category and claim the fourth as an official Mexican holiday with more beer!!!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m now heading downstairs to celebrate the 5th and make up for yesterday’s drinking as well.

So, “Happy Cinco de Mayo!” and “May the Fourth be with you!”
